2024: A Year of Impact
As the year comes to a close, we want to share uplifting news of the conservation impact we’ve had together in 2024. Your commitment to protecting rainforests for species, people, and our planet has made these successes possible. Together, we have made great strides for conservation this year across the globe!
Thanks to you, 2024 is now the second-best year in our history for newly protected acres! Together with our conservation partners and you, we have safeguarded 8,416,483 acres of critical habitat across the globe this year—an area nearly the size of Switzerland or four Yellowstone National Parks. This is almost as many acres as we protected together during the first 23 years of our operation.
We’ve secured critical habitat for 935 threatened species in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia this year. And, together, we hit another milestone: 50 million acres protected to date! (That number has already grown to over 54 million acres since June.)
President Lula of Brazil signed a decree to protect over 180,000 acres of the largest contiguous belt of mangroves in the world in a Rainforest Trust-supported project along the Brazilian coast. Over 4.4 million acres were conserved for iconic African species like zebras, wild dogs, oryx, and black rhinos. And in Indonesia, new hope is dawning for Sumatran Tigers and Sumatran Elephants via new protection of high-carbon, highly intact rainforests.
Together, we have made great strides for conservation in 2024
Asia-Pacific
Over 649,404 acres were protected in India, Indonesia, Laos, and Nepal for 179 threatened species.
Latin America and the Caribbean
More than 2,446,914 acres were protected, benefiting 434 threatened species.
Africa
Safeguarded 5,320,166 acres of irreplaceable habitat for 361 threatened species.
These reserves store 976,126,721 million metric tons of CO₂ equivalents—comparable to the carbon emissions of over 227 million gas-powered vehicles driven for one year—to mitigate climate change.
From the Amazon to Asia, thank you for protecting nature. Donate now to protect vital rainforests, save endangered species, and combat climate change—your action today makes a world of difference!
