Every day, we lose an average 80,000 acres of tropical rainforest to deforestation.
Their destruction has exponential impact. Centuries of carbon stored is released into our atmosphere. Species disperse or perish with no place to live or food to eat. If we lose enough rainforest, what remains is forever changed. Scientists indicate we are close to that tipping point now in the Amazon.
The solution is simple: Save the rainforest.
For 34 years, Rainforest Trust has been stopping deforestation by establishing protected areas. Our reserves ensure that the rainforests we all rely upon are not destroyed. It is a simple approach that we have used across the tropics—protecting over 38 million acres.

Healthy Rainforests. Healthy Planet.
Healthy rainforests are critical to a healthy planet. Creating protected areas is the most effective way to protect endangered animals, safeguard biodiversity, stop deforestation, and maintain the health of all species on our planet.

“Protecting land is the critical first step in halting extinctions and stabilizing our climate. It can only happen through partnerships, and Rainforest Trust is committed to helping replicate this success worldwide.”

“Halting and reversing biodiversity loss and climate change requires expanded protected and conserved areas, especially in tropical forests—this has been Rainforest Trust’s mission for over 30 years.”

“Last year, nearly one acre of rainforest was lost every second, which equates to an area the size of Pennsylvania that is simply gone, up in smoke. The biodiversity is lost and the carbon once stored is now contributing to climate change,” said Leslie VanSant, vice president of philanthropy at Rainforest Trust. “Creating and maintaining protected areas is the simplest most cost-effective solution to reduce climate change. Rainforest Trust has been doing just that for nearly 34 years.”

“Halting and reversing biodiversity loss and climate change requires expanded protected and conserved areas, especially in tropical forests—this has been Rainforest Trust’s mission for over 30 years,” said James C. Deutsch, Ph.D., CEO of Rainforest Trust. “Developing nations and Indigenous Peoples need financing to achieve this, which is why we are pledging to more than double our level of funding between now and 2030 and urging other private and public funders to do the same.”
